Makalu which stands at 8485m is best known as the fifth highest mountain in the world. Makalu is located in the Mahalangur Himalayan range which is the same range where Mt. Everest lies. It is accompanied by its sister summits, Makalu II at 7678m and Chomo Lonzo at 7804m. Makalu which is clustered with climbers from all over the world was first summited by a French team in 1955 after three failed attempts. Makalu, like Mt. Everest gives a difficult and surreal challenge to climb.
The typical route for ascending Makalu remains to be the north East Ridge through the lumber between Makalu and Kangchungtse. However, the west face is also amicable. Makalu is particularly pyramidal in shape. Ascending Makalu requires ample skill but it is known to have been climbed without supplemental oxygen and ascended even during the cold hours of winter. Makalu is mostly recommended to thrill seekers. The journey to Makalu and back gives an insight to the primeval environment and the intriguing ethnic groups residing there.
