Thapa Peak or Dhumpus Peak Climbing

Standing in the Kaski district of north central Nepal, Dhumpus Peak at 6012m is a technically easy peak to climb. Dhumpus lies in the most widely known Annapurna trekking circuit. It can be evidently visible from Dhumpus Village. It is a part of the Dhaulagiri range.

The trail starts from Tukuche and runs through the Kali Gandaki Valley. Climbers can get to experience the life of the Thakali community and their hospitality. The exceptional wildlife and the temple of ChumigGyatsa or Muktinath give a feeling of tranquility. The trail slowly leads to the Dhumpus pass at 5200m. The peak itself is a delight with a panoramic view of Himalayan peaks such as Annapurna, Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri I, Mt. Machapuchrey and others.

Thapa Peak or Dhumpus Peak is for the climbers who love to gather some experience and are enthusiastic to explore. Climbing Dhumpus peak is not the only thing that is satisfying but the vista of the Annapurna Mountain range seen from the summit is exceptional and breath-taking.

Day 01:

Arrival in Kathmandu

Today, we arrive in the capital of the geographically and culturally hypnotic country of Nepal. Upon arriving at the Tribhuvan International Airport, we will betransferred into the hotel by our airport representative. We will be greeted traditionally with garlands and drinks. We can spend the rest of the day relishing the extremelyappealing Nepali cuisine and the local bars and restaurants. We will stretch our legs around the streets of Kathmandu. We will stay overnight at the hotel. 

Day 02:

Sightseeing around Kathmandu and preparation for the trip

Kathmandu is one of those cities which are coupled with modern buildings amongst various UNESCO Heritage Sites. Today, we will go sightseeing around Kathmandu city. We can visit temples and culturally significant places including the Kathmandu Durbar Square as well as the Patan Durbar Square. We will also buy our climbing equipment and will also discuss with the climbing/trekking guide. We will stay overnight at the hotel.

Day 03:

Kathmandu to Beni

Today, we will go on an eleven hour drive from Kathmandu to Beni. The road passes through Marshyangdi through profoundly terraced fields and small hill towns to the Seti River. The road then directly leads to Pokhara. Pokhara, which is best known as the cheapest and most satisfying tourist destination with lakes, caves and temples gives us an insight to what Nepal actually is and what we are going to experience further up our journey.We will get to witness Phewa Tal (lake) along with the snowcapped Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The road leads further up towards Naudanda. It then descends to Nayapul.Nayapul gives a brief insight of the Annapurna South,Mt. Machapuchrey along with the plush green hills, terraces and villages. The road then passes through the bank of the Mardi River. The entire drive is filled with panoramic views. We will stay overnight at camp/lodge.

Day 04:

Beni to Maldhunga (1300m.)

Today, our trekking will begin. We will trek from Beni to Maldhunga at 1300m. The trek is estimated to take about six hours. We will stay overnight at a camp or lodge.

Day 05:

Maldunga to Darbang

Today we will trek from Maldhunga to Darbang. The trail will pass through jungles filled with oaks, rhododendrons and so on. Then it leads to a flat land passing through a stream along the way. Darbang is known best for its Magar and Limbu settlement. Darbang provides a beautiful camping site with the insight to the lifestyle of the ethnic groups residing in peace. We will stay overnight at camp/lodge.

Day 06:

Darbang to Takum

Today, we will trek from Darbang to Takum.The trail gently ascends through a slender path in the beginning. Then, we will move past a flat land through a jungle with varieties of rhododendrons, oaks and Christmas trees with is a picturesque site to see. The trail leads to a small stream, and thenascends towardsTakum. Our camping site will be behind the central Takumschool. We can also visit the nearby temple. We will stay overnight at camp.

Day 07:

Takum to Muri

Today we will be trekking from Takum to Muri. The trekking will begin with a descending trail passing through a jungle. The trail slowly ascends after which it passes along flat land untilMuri is reached. Muriis a small village largely occupied by Gurung and Rai. We wil get to experience the harmony of these ethnic communities. We will stay overnight at camp.

Day 08:

Muri to Bagar (2080m.)

Today, we will trek from Muri to Bagar at 2080m. In the beginning, the trail gently descendstowards a slope and crosses a rocky stream. After that, it descends among terraced fields towardsDhoraKhola. We will then cross the river and climb to the right, and reach Ghorbandhara. We will get to experience the exquisite views from here and will get a sight of Ghustung south at 6465m. The trail will then lead towards Nauraand then ascend towards a steep grass-covered hill. We will then reach Myagdikhola which has a steep-walled V-shape as the cross ends. We will then have to move toward the steep slope which requires some precision to walk. We will then have to walk on anumerouscrisscross stone step paths. Finally we will enter a cross to the right. The gorge of the MyagdiKhola is quite dangerous, thus a lot of carefulness at walking is required. We will now descend towards a forested area where Bagar is noticeable. We will be camping in the yards or the terraced field further down towards the village area. We will stay overnight at camp.

Day 09:

Bagar to Dobang (2520m.)

Today, we willtrek from Bagar towards Dobang at 2520m. We will not get a sight of any village in this area. We will stayovernight at camp. 

Day 10:

Dovan to Upper Vungini (Italian Base Camp)

Today, we will embark on a trek from Dovan to Upper Vungini  which is known as the Italian Base Camp. The trail will gently pass through the stunning forest. In just a few hours, the trail leads to a significant altitude gain with the sights of mountains arising from side to side. We will stay at camp for the night.

Day 11:

Upper Vungini (Italian Base Camp)

Due to the sudden gain in altitude, we will have to acclimatize for the day. We will get the sight of the beautiful greens of the forests below and the magnificent whites of the mountains above. We will stay overnight at a camp. 

Day 12:

Upper Vungini (Italian Base Camp) to Glacier Camp

Today, we will trek from Upper Vungini (Italian Base Camp) to Glacier Camp. The trail passes through a glacier. We will be using a rope in some complicated places and finally reach the main glacier. The sights of the mesmerizing mountains eradicate most of the fear. The trail is quite tricky and difficult. We will set our camp in the glacier rubble where we will stay overnight. 

Day 13:

Glacier Camp to Dhaulagiri Base Camp

Today, we will trek from Glacier Camp to Dhaulagiri Base Camp. The trail leads to gives way to the smooth white glacier. The Dhaulagiri Base Camp is particularly difficult to reach.Wewill have to be extra precautions of the slippery glaciers. We will stay overnight at camp.

Day 14:

Dhaulagiri base camp to French Col (5010m.)

Today, we will trek from Dhaulagiri base camp to French Col at 5010m.We will trek in a trail covered with ice and soft snow. The mesmerizing view of the Dhaulagiri range will be at full display. We will stay overnight at camp.

Day 15:

French Col to Thapa pass (5015m)

Today, we will trek from French Col to Thapa pass at 5015m. The snowcapped mountains will remain throughout the journey. The trail will lead to a flat pathway covered with ice and snow. We will stay overnight at camp.

Day 16:

Thapa Peak or Dhumpus Base Camp.

Today, we will take rest at Thapa Peak Base Camp. We will have to acclimatize for the sudden change in altitude. Today, we will prepare for Thapa peak summit. We will stay overnight at a camp. 

Day 17:

Thapa Peak

Today, we will climb Thapa peak at 6012m. The exquisite views of the snowcapped mountains including Annapurna, Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri I, Mt. Machapuchrey and others. Along with the gentle flow of the wind is very much satisfying. A moment of sheer joy will be experience along with pride at having reached Thapa/ Dhumpus Peak. We will stay overnight at a camp. 

Day 18:

Thapa Peak Base Camp to Yak Kharka

Today, we will trek from Thapa Peak Base Camp to Yak Kharka. The trial leads to a plane. Then we pass through BattaseDanda. We will get the views of Tukuche peak, Thapa peak and the mesmerizing Annapurna range. We will stay overnight at camp.

Day 19:

Yak Kharka to Marpha (2670m.)

Today, we will treak from Yak Kharka to Marpha at 2670m. The trail leads downhill passing small forests of juniper and various other local vegitations. Along the trail, we will be surrounded by Nilgiri, Annapurna and rocky hills. We will stay overnight at camp/lodge.

Day 20:

Marpha to Pokhara

Today, our trekking will end. We will take a jeep from Marpha to Pokhara and slowly leave the mountains behind. We can briefly roam around the main streets of Pokahara and enjoy the nightlife as well .We will stay overnight at a hotel in Pokhara. 

Day 21:

Pokhara to Kathmandu

Today, we will bid farewell to Pokhara and return to Kathmandu which takes about seven long hours. The road will lead towards Damauli, Dumre, Muglin, Kurintar, Naubise and finally Thankot which is the western gateway to Kathmandu. We will be transferred to our hotel in Kathmandu. We will stay overnight at the hotel. 

Day 22:

Shopping and sightseeing around Kathmandu

Today, we will go on a shopping spree in the local shops of Kathmandu. We can buy various souvenirs to take back home. We can also visit the cultural sites. We will stay overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu. 

Day 23:

Departure

We will depart from Nepal as per the flight schedule set by our airport representative. We will leave Nepal, taking with us the contentment of having excavated its plush green landscape and brilliantly white Mountains. We will have experienced and learned a lot about the cultural diversity and geographical setting. We will depart from Nepal with the promise of returning back again to gather such similar experience as that of having climbed the mighty and stunning Thapa/Dhumpus Peak.
